Spring Cleaning 2010
Spring is a good time to get your computer files organized. Just like spring cleaning your home, getting your computer files cleaned up can be quite a job. But it’s so worthwhile when you can easily find just what you are looking for.The first step is to get your file folders named correctly. Check to see if you have more than one folder with the same types of documents in them. If you do, pick the folder you want to use, and “click and drag” documents from the second one, to this one. If the folder name is ambiguous, change the name by right-clicking on it, and choose “rename”. Don’t forget to go back and delete that second empty folder. Many of us
download our photos to our computers, then promptly lose track of them.
Usually they all get put in the same folder without being given names. If
you want to review your photos, the easiest way to see them is to put your
cursor on the first photo in a group, then right –click, and pick “preview’.
By clicking the arrow button at bottom of photo, the next ones will appear, one
after the other.Again, you can create folders beforehand with the name of the event, or a word that best defines them. Do the same as with documents; right-click, rename, then click and drag them to the appropriate folder. Need Help Getting Started?

Make Vacation Plans Now
Spring is a time for creativity, hope and planning. More and more, people are looking online when researching where to spend their next vacation. You’ll not only get better rates by planning early, you’ll be creating “hopeful expectation”. A positive side effect to making vacation plans early, is you can become more
organized when thinking about this happy event. And it’s wonderful to come
home to a calm orderly environment, as it prolongs the effects of the
vacation. Some good travel websites are; Kayak.com, Tripadvisor.com, LonelyPlanet.com, and Formmers.com. With all the recent competition between airlines, look online for some incredible deals. Kayak is a great site because it shows all flights and prices for your destination. Choose carefully when using online travel companies where you pay upfront (eg., Travelocity, Expedia). You cannot get your money back no matter how unhappy you are with your hotel or car. If you are bringing your laptop, make sure you know how to get your email from the internet if you don’t normally do this. This involves going online to your service provider and setting up your log-in and password. Practice this before you go, or call KIST to help you get this set up. How to Send Photos KIST can teach you how to send your vacation photos the right way. Ever had a photo emailed to you that took forever to open, only showed an
eyeball, and was turned the wrong way? To prevent this from happening, set
up
your camera correctly - instead of manipulating the photo after it’s in your
computer.

If they have Wi-Fi, you can usually get onto it. GPS not working? Go to maps.google.com instead. Don’t know what to do after you arrive? Google: “things to do”, or “activities” and the city name. Check a hotel’s website for rates before you walk in, as they may be discounted. Google on your cell phone. If you need a phone number while you are driving,

you can keep your hands on the wheel. Dial 800-GOOG411. If you’d rather, just call
KIST, we can figure out where you
are, and “talk-you-in” over the phone for only $1 a minute.Watch your favorite TV shows: Whenever you want at Slashcontrol.com and hulu.com. Or play your favorite music on Pandora.com. We have been using these sites for quite a while and haven’t seen any viruses. But be careful on Itunes, Limewear and Facebook. We’ve helped many clients who got infected from these sites. Attention Shutterbugs. If you take a lot of photos that you want to share, the easiest way to do this is with a KIST Photo Website (very simplistic & low cost). Online photo programs, like Kodak and ShutterFly, require that your recipients set up an online account in order to view your photos— and many people just don’t want to go through this process. A KIST Photo Website: Is a great option. You just email your friends the website address, avoiding long download times. Plus, you can easily modify it when you want to change or add photos - or, expand it for other purposes. |
